'Champion Of Democracy' - Tinubu Mourns Ex-NEC Chair, Humphrey Nwosu

President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), who passed away in a hospital in the United States on October 24.

Nwosu served as the chairman of NEC from 1989 to 1993, during which he oversaw the landmark June 12, 1993 presidential election, later annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida.

Before this pivotal election, Nwosu’s commission successfully managed governorship and parliamentary elections.

He introduced the innovative and cost-effective OPTION A-4 voting method, which allowed voters to queue behind the photographs of their preferred candidates at polling stations.

In a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it was noted that Tinubu cherished Nwosu’s legacy as a bold and courageous administrator.

The President expressed his profound sorrow over the passing of a patriot who significantly contributed to Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

The President holds fond memories of Nwosu as a bold and courageous administrator.

“President Tinubu affirms that the greatest honour to champions of democracy like Nwosu is to ensure that elections in the country remain credible, transparent and democratic, reflecting the people’s right to choose their leaders and shape their future.

“The President prays to God Almighty to grant the soul of the departed political scientist eternal rest and divine comfort for those who mourn him
,” said the statement.
