In a major announcement, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed Enugu State as the host for the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival. The Coal City State emerged victorious from a rigorous bidding process, promising to deliver a world-class event when the festival arrives in 2027.
The National Sports Festival, a biennial competition that unites athletes from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, is a celebration of sportsmanship, national unity, and athletic excellence.
It has been a platform for identifying and promoting Nigerian sports talents since its inception in 1973. Enugu’s selection as the 2027 host marks the first time the South-Eastern State will welcome the prestigious event.
This announcement follows preparations for the 22nd edition of the Games, set to take place in January 2025 in Ogun State. Ogun is set to host over 15,000 athletes, generating excitement and anticipation throughout the Gateway State.
Honourable Bukola Olopade, former chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and current NSC Director General, expressed confidence that the Ogun Games would set a high standard.
“Ogun State is poised to deliver a premium tournament, showcasing the best of Nigerian sports,” he said.
Notably, this is the first time the host of a subsequent Games is known before the current edition concludes, a development that gives Enugu State ample time to prepare and guarantees a seamless transition between the festivals.
This early announcement is expected to boost the festival’s visibility and corporate image, allowing for meticulous planning and preparations.
The last edition, hosted in Asaba, Delta State, saw participation from over 11,000 athletes, solidifying the festival’s status as Nigeria’s largest sporting event.
With Enugu set to take the reins in 2027, the festival’s tradition of inclusivity and excellence continues, as it prepares to unearth the next generation of Nigerian sports stars.
“The National Sports Festival is more than a competition; it’s a symbol of unity and excellence,” stated Honourable Olopade. “We look forward to Enugu writing the next chapter in this proud tradition.”
