The Labour Party (LP) in Edo State has called on voters to disregard recent inflammatory comments made by some political figures ahead of the gubernatorial election.

The party has urged eligible voters to focus on exercising their civic rights without being swayed by fear or intimidation.

Naija News reports that over 2.2 million registered voters with permanent voter cards will head to the polls today to choose a new governor.

The election sees three major contenders: Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

Tensions have escalated following controversial statements by the sitting governor, Godwin Obaseki, who is backing PDP’s Ighodalo.

During a campaign rally in Oredo LGA, Obaseki described the election as a “do or die” affair, raising concerns about possible violence.

In a subsequent television interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, the governor reinforced his stance, stating, “It’s a do-or-die affair because if they do, we die.”

These remarks have caused unease among the electorate. Despite these tensions, the Labour Party has urged voters not to be intimidated.

In an interview with Daily Post, Edo State Labour Party Chairman, Kelly Ogbaloi, dismissed Obaseki’s remarks as “worthless propaganda” designed to discourage voter turnout.

He said, “it is a worthless propaganda put out there by these ones to call for a ‘do or die’. We advise and encourage our electorates to dismiss that and come out en-mass and vote.

“No one should listen to such a statement of charade and encounter self disenfranchisement.

“In this contest, the Labour Party has a broad perspective and the party is billed to win the election
.”
