The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled its ward congress in the state for September 27.

Naija News understands that the congress will follow a few days after the Local Government Election in the state scheduled for September 21,

The party has since inaugurated the Congress Planning Committee to be headed by Mike Ahumibe and Amby Umeh as chairman and secretary, respectively.

During his address to party members on Friday, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the flagbearer of the party in the 2023 governorship election and National Secretary, urged members to prioritize peace and unity during the local government congresses by making sacrifices.

Anyanwu also cautioned against division, misunderstanding, and lawlessness, and appealed to all aspirants and stakeholders in the 305 electoral wards in the state to maintain decorum before, during, and after the exercise.

He emphasized that the exercise should not be used to showcase power, flaunt wealth, or display desperation, but should be seen as an opportunity to reconcile and promote the party’s ideology in the state.

Anyanwu praised the leadership of the Caretaker Committee chaired by Chidi Dike for uniting members and emphasized that personal interests were set aside in the execution of their duties.

He said, “The leadership of the Caretaker Committee of PDP in the state has performed optimally by bringing everyone together. One thing that is remarkable in their leadership is that Sir Chidi Dike’s led team has shunned personal interest in the discharge of their duties.”

Anyanwu further stated that in order for the party to attain greater political success, it is imperative to empower grassroots members to choose or elect the candidate they believe in and are willing to collaborate with.

“For me as a person, I have no reason to interfere in any ward to impose anyone on them. Once that is done, it means I have failed in my responsibilities as a leader. Please, this advice goes to stakeholders in the 305 wards; allow the people to elect their choices.”

He also urged party members to actively engage in the activities within their local wards, emphasizing the importance of fostering unity and advocating for the party’s beneficial initiatives within the state.

The national secretary of the PDP remains hopeful that the party can regain leadership roles, both locally and nationally, highlighting the lack of authentic supporters within the ruling APC as the root cause of the current state of turmoil across the country.

“Those in positions of authority are confused on what to do next to remedy the situation. In Imo State, the situation is worse and most terrible; there is no known programme of APC in the state aside from creating confusion and frustrating the masses.

“PDP is an organic party with genuine followers. Presently, there is unusual hunger in the state, and those expected to address the issue are keeping quiet. What Imo people should ask the people handling the affairs of the state is how the palliatives sent to Imo State grew wings. What happened to it? In whose custody are the palliatives? What is still holding its sharing? Why should the APC administration in the state discriminate against Imo people?”
the party chieftain said.

While inaugurating the committee, Anyanwu revealed the decision of the party to accommodate up to six women at ward levels.

But he maintained that where there are no capable women to take up the positions, the most vibrant men may be considered.
