Governor Babagana Zulum‘s government has received a donation of 1.2 million Euros from the Swiss Federation as contributed to the Borno State Flood Disaster Relief Fund.
Naija News understands that the fund aims to provide essential assistance to those affected by the recent flood disaster in the state.
This contribution was revealed by the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Nicolas Lang, who headed a delegation from the Swiss Embassy during a condolence visit to the government house in Maiduguri.
Nicolas Martin-Achard, the Senior Humanitarian Advisor, and Mr. Florent Geel, the Senior Political Advisor at the Swiss Embassy, joined Ambassador Lang.
Lang noted that Switzerland had previously supported the Borno Model in 2023 with approximately 700,000 USD.
“This contribution has been fully implemented in due time and purpose.
“The Borno Model is a programme for the mass exit of armed Boko Haram insurgents and civilians trapped in the lines of conflict.
“These donations in 2023 and 2024 demonstrate Switzerland’s continued support and solidarity with the Borno State Government and the people of Borno affected by the crises,” said Ambassador Lang.
Governor Zulum expressed his gratitude to Lang and his team for dedicating their time to visit Borno State in a show of sympathy and to the Swiss Federal Government for their generous contribution to the victims of the recent floods.
He said, “On behalf of the Government and the good people of Borno, let me express our profound gratitude to the Swiss Government for this generous donation.
“We are equally grateful to Amb Lang and his team for the sympathy visit. Rest assured, the donation shall be judiciously utilised under my watch.”
Naija News has reported that the year’s flood disaster displaced over one million individuals in and around Maiduguri, a central location for addressing the humanitarian crisis in the northeast, marking one of the most severe flooding events.
The rapid rise of water levels, triggered by the failure of a dam after a weekend of heavy rainfall in northeastern Nigeria, has resulted in the inundation of thousands of homes.
